Fragrance bottles The collectors

 |   |

When it comes to perfume bottles, it is the attention to detail that speaks to luxury, and for the scent business, packaging really can add value. The bottle attracts the consumer and sells the image – it is the door to the fragrance inside. Not only can aesthetics lead to luxury aspiration, but also promote sales, especially in high-end sectors. The right perfume bottle design boosts the value of the scent, allowing luxury perfume houses to gain both more profits and a stronger market presence.

“The bottle should be an ‘objet d’art’ – it’s really what makes the statement. It’s the selling point,” says Mary Ellen Lapsansky, vice president of the Fragrance Foundation, the US-based organisation that promotes and educates consumers about perfume use. Major perfume houses pay special attention to how they design the perfume bottle, although Lapsansky admits very few dare to be too different in their presentation.

She points to Chanel, describing it as “iconic”. By never changing its bottle design, Chanel has built a brand, but also a good reputation for quality fragrance, says Lapsansky. Other perfume houses renowned for their luxury perfume bottles include Christian Dior, Guerlain and Caron.

Avril Lavigne – Forbidden Rose (Second Fragrance)

 |  ,  |

Avril Lavigne will roll out a new fragrance called Forbidden Rose in July and at the beginning of August 2010 following her debut scent Black Star. The tag line is “Dare to Discover” which is said to be a message for encouraging girls to push boundaries even further than with the first scent. Despite the fact that celebrity fragrances are often thought to be light affairs, and tween perfumes even more so, the singer pointed out that the process was arduous and took two years to complete. Like a pop song that everyone enjoys and is turned into a successful, insisting earworm, the new scent is a medley of pop influences. It is reminiscent of the black rose ad for Kate by Kate Moss, borrowing on the same Gothic inspiration; the flacon makes you think of a sooty, mass-market avatar of Lola by Marc Jacobs; the gesture of presenting a rose to the public on the ad recalls the iconic apple extended on the book cover of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, a visual link which is actually reinforced by the scent description which refers to the theme of the forbidden apple; the cemetery background is a riff on the vampire theme which is currently so popular; finally, as Lavigne recorded a song for Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton, one can see the imagery here as being a prolongation of the mood of the film. Forbidden Rose is a woody fruity-floral. Top notes are red apple, white peach, bourbon pepper; heart notes are lotus flower, apple blossom, heliotrope and pomegranate; base notes are vanilla, melting chocolate, sandalwood.

Estee Lauder – Brasil Dream for Men

 |  ,  |

A travel retail fragrance (duty free shops) from Estee Lauder, Brasil Dream is a spicy-woody aroma focused around a nutmeg, pepper and labdanum accord and one of Lauder’s first limited edition fragrances for men; the counterpart to Brasil Dream for Women.

Pros: Easy to wear and surprisingly not a mainstream copy of another mass market scent – feels niche; a spicy incense aroma that actually wears quite subtly.

Cons: As it is “cologne” concentration, this one wears close to the skin and has limited longevity.

In 2009, following the successes of Lauder’s dream destination fragrances for women (launched in the international travel market; Emerald Dream, Bali Dream, Brasil Dream), Lauder launched its newest men’s fragrance – Brasil Dream for Men – albeit to a limited and exclusive audience.
